Eliminating Downtime
While speaking at Winconnections, Alan Sugano received a call from the President of a company that specializes in large ASP.net development projects. He expressed his obvious frustration that their email system was down again for the third time in the last week. The system's downtime was causing major disruption in his company. ADS Consulting Group (ADS) performed a Network Review (Network Physical) to review their existing systems, and developed a custom solution to address this company's requirements. They needed servers with different Operating Systems and different versions of SQL Server to duplicate various development environments. They purchased two ESX hosts that run approximately 15 virtual servers. This allowed them to reproduce the necessary development environment and save a significant amount of money compared to purchasing 15 separate physical servers. Since these upgrades were completed, the system has remained stable, and their email system has not gone done once in over 18 months.
Extreme System Makeover
Users working at this company had lost confidence in their computer system. They experienced a major data loss twice on one of their critical systems. They decided to outsource this package in order to prevent further data loss and improve stability. Users were bypassing the internal IT department by using friends and family to assist with their IT requirements. ADS Consulting Group (ADS) performed a Network Review (Network Physical) and developed a prioritized list of suggested network upgrades. The company has approximately 120 users with three locations. The company ended up implementing all of the suggestions, which effectively replaced their existing systems. This included firewall upgrades, server virtualization, Exchange, SharePoint, Windows Server 2008, secure remote access, migration of their external DNS servers, Smart phones, and replacing point to point T1's with redundant VPN connections. During the implementation one internal person and one new hire were trained as the new IT support staff. During the implementation, ADS performed knowledge transfer to the new IT support staff on how each system was configured and how to properly maintain it. Since the upgrade, the users have regained confidence in the system, and the new IT staff handles the day to day support requests of the organization. At the end of the year they plan to move the outsourced package back to an internally managed server. Now instead of an obstacle to the company's productivity, the system has become a valuable stable tool that assists with the company's objectives and goals.
Long Term Relationship
In 1992 Alan was speaking on the topic of "Selecting the Right Server." The IT manager for a local city attended the presentation and was impressed with Alan's insights. This was the beginning of an 18 year relationship that continues today. The original installation replaced a mini computer system with several NetWare Servers and wireless bridges that connected all three city buildings. Their system has gone through major system upgrades approximately every four to five years. The latest installation involves a server consolidation project using ESX servers to consolidate numerous physical servers, along with an integrated Disaster Recovery Plan using ESX Servers and Virtual Machines.
