Here's the scenario:
  1. Host is running ESXi 4.0 or 4.1.
  2. VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  3. VM is running Exchange/SQL Server so you have the option checked to quiesce the VM before the backup.
  4. vRangerPro 4.5.3.
The backup will fail with a snapshot hardware configuration mismatch error. When VMware creates a snapshot with this configuration, it creates two delta files per vmdk. This causes vRanger to error out on the backup, becuase it's only expecting one delta file per vmdk. Vizioncore is working with VMware to resolve this issue, but currently there is no solution.

Workarounds:

Shutdown the VM before backing it up.
Use an "in VM" backup agent to properly backup to VM.

As soon as Vizioncore has a solution I will update this post.

*** Update.

Vizioncore has released vRangerPro 5.0 which appears to solve the quiescing issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 guests running on ESX. Although 5.0 is still in Beta, it appears to be stable. The production version should be available within 30 days.
